The Karagiozis Project

Deciding in times of democracy / What would Karagiozis say?

metamatic:taf happily presents the exhibition The Karagiozis Project, opening on Monday 16 November 2015 at 20.00 with a discussion. The exhibition space will be open to the public from the 12th of November giving them a chance to experience the preparation of a show of shadow theatre.

What would Karagiozis do today?

An American puppet maker and visual artist leads a group of translators, political people, curators, and culture makers, and teams up with a Karagiozis player to create a new performance that asks this question.

In this 3-part installation, people use Karagiozis-eyes (his wit, wisdom, common touch, as well as his sense of humor) to review how we come to decisions in a democracy.  The installation's three parts are: a paper vote, an exhibition on the walls, and a performance in the space. During the performance, the audience will make a choice that affects how the play ends. This live experience works like democracy: through participation.

Greece's debt problems have made headlines all over the world. Government contributes to the problematic situation at the same time that it tries to fix it. What can the people do? It's time that Karagiozis, a simple man, has his turn in trying some solutions. The audience participates in his attempts. The exhibition launches Karagiozis from the classroom into the gallery, creating new contexts, calling for a re-evaluation of what we know about ourselves as citizens by offering a humorous proxy: Karagiozis.

Participating artists: Janaki Ranpura, Tasos Konstas, Peter Maravelis, Paul Hertneky, Erato Tzavara, Debra Papadinoff, and Esther Morales.

Opening discussion includes filmmaker and Paraskhnio host Leftheris Xanthopoulos.
