metamatic:taf in Thessaloniki / opening with the exhibition uP
metamatic:taf is delighted to announce the opening of a new physical space of social gathering and cultural activity in the city of Thessaloniki that will operate alongside the beloved space in Athens, taking up brand new initiatives and developing its own distinct identity. With a clear reference to the values that define the project metamatic:taf as a whole, the space will constitute an independant establishment implementing events related to all forms of artistic production, highlighting the dialogue between applied and fine arts and the promotion of interdisciplinary research.
metamatic:taf Thessaloniki opens on 19 May 2014 with the exhibition uP, which will run until 31 August.
The exhibition uP was presented for the first time at the gallery space of metamatic:taf Athens by the platform Create an Accident and was part of its annual program entitled "View Images in High Revolution".
Paraphrasing one of the most familiar expressions of the internet world (view images in high resolution), the notion of analysis is addressed to as a method of devising radical versions of reality. uP, the gesture of looking up, constitutes an action which can fundamentally fuel people’s lives and answers the request for change in the way people view and perceive the social domain.
One hundred artists and creative groups from all over the world initiated from the question of what one sees when they turn their gaze upwards and expressed multifaceted, unique approaches through their personal point of view. Thus, they contributed in the composition of one large-scale sky/panorama which covered the ceiling of the gallery, by creating a 50x50cm pixel of that sky in their own unique way and perspective. Now the new version of the composition of the sky will take its form on the ceiling of the gallery space at metamatic:taf Thessaloniki.
Reexamining the notion of viewing the surrounding space using the dynamics of analysis as a tool, the artworks constituting uP’s sky bring to the surface what was unperceived by the look. The new perspective is composed of images previously concealed or unshaped in a background of pixels, behind the first impression of each stimulus we come across.
uP is a continuous, original, exciting experiment on the philosophy of synthesis and the way the distinct identity of each participating artist retains its autonomy, while at the same time constituting part of a single unique artwork. A work of art, which simultaneously devises, reforms and redetermines the relationship with one’s self and the world around us.
