Love Letters to CHAOS
Curatorial Open Call 2013 / Chosen proposal
metamatic:taf is excited to present the exhibition Love Letters to CHAOS, which opens on Wednesday 30 May and will run until the 23 June 2013.
The exhibition was selected through the annual Curatorial Open Call organized by metamatic:taf for the third consecutive year addressing young curators under 35 years - old, giving them the opportunity to propose a group contemporary art exhibition which is realized in metamatic:taf’ s exhibition spaces.
«In the beginning there was chaos.
Then I was born, alone, in a broken world
with a worn-out God roaming from door to door
begging his existence. Then we suddenly became two. We kissed
And we started killing each other»
Having the above verses by Tasos Leivaditis as a starting point, Vasileia Kagka and Katerina Stamou reconstruct through the works of 14 young Greek artists the erotic experience as it takes place in the current humanitarianly fragmented environment, where Romantic Love emerges as a concept eminently interwoven with the intersubjectivity stemming from the need to restore the ellipsis which we bear within us, the child of Porus (Resourcefulness) and Penia (Poverty).
Taking the aforementioned concept into consideration, the exhibition Love Letters to CHAOS, just like a postmodern erotic manifesto, it broadens the issue to those aspects composing nowadays romantic love, which is characterized by a constant repulsion of the two subjects of the erotic union inside a world filled with new substitutes of the erotic object that constitute together the current erotic experience.
In the world of new media the Ellipsis remains, yet it mutates. The realization of the erotic transfer from one person to the other finds obstacles in computer screens, the human geography of large cities, the power of image. The result: the Ego finds itself trapped in the existential Today’s Chaos and the erotic experience is lived like a brand new form of adventure.
However, as it has been characteristically expressed by the philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche: “Chaos gives birth to order”. Thereby, the concepts of order and disorder pervade the exhibition referring to processes attempted to be accomplished by man as part of a whole in order to find himself in harmony with his innermost Being while at the same time these same concepts determine the manifestation of the coexistence of people and new forms of love within the current urban environment. Romantic love comes about as a “parasite” feeding these concepts, sometimes causing order while others disorder, according to the social dimension given to it. The artworks constitute love letters, the use of language in an attempt to introduce intrinsic meaning through the imposition of order on Chaos, whereby Chaos is no other than the quintessence of Today.
